The bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae) brings vitality and modern refinement at once — an exotic mood that sits harmoniously in a living room, café, or office lobby.
Grown indoors it is prized for its sculptural leaves; on mature, well-lit plants the famous orange blooms can appear, usually between June and July.
Keeping it healthy
Water generously when the topsoil has dried, and keep it in a bright spot with good airflow. It loves light, but harsh midsummer sun can scorch the leaves — a window with curtain-filtered light is ideal.
If leaf tips dry brown, the air is dry or still: mist around the leaves and air the room regularly.
In winter move it to a warm interior away from cold window draughts, and water less often while growth slows to avoid over-watering.
