Bugo (Death Notice) Text Templates and Examples: The Order for Sending Notices on KakaoTalk
Family, then workplace, then acquaintances, then groups: the order and wording, written from the bereaved family's side
Family, then workplace, then acquaintances, then groups: the order and wording, written from the bereaved family's side
The funeral hall and room number are set, but the one line of text to tell people will not come. Templates come up right away in a search, but few places explain who to send to first and how much to put in a group chat.
Follow the order below. The wording is written from the bereaved family's side, so you can change only the names and places and use it as is.

Family and relatives come first. Tell immediate family by phone and send the text afterward. A relative who first hears the news in a group chat will carry the hurt for a long time.
Next is the workplace of the deceased and of the chief mourner (상주, the family member who hosts the funeral). Do not send to all staff directly. Send to one person only, the team lead or the office administrator. Passing it around inside the company is their job.
Acquaintances come next, and groups such as alumni associations or religious gatherings come last. Send to groups only after the mourning hall is confirmed, so you do not have to send a second message correcting the location.
The basic template is as follows.
[부고 (Death notice)] We respectfully inform you that our father, Kim ○○, passed away on October 7, 2026.
Mourning hall (빈소): ○○ Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 3 / Departure for burial (발인): October 9, 7:00 a.m. / Burial site (장지): ○○ Memorial Park
Respectfully, Kim △△, chief mourner
Only one word changes: 별세 (byeolse, passed away). Protestant Christians use 소천 (socheon, called home to God), and Catholics use 선종 (seonjong, a peaceful death in the Lord). Buddhist families keep 별세 and often add a note about the 49재 (49th-day memorial rite) after the funeral.
| Religion | Term for death | Example wording | Terms to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| General | 별세 (byeolse) | We respectfully inform you that [name] passed away (별세하셨기에 삼가 알려드립니다) | 사망, 죽음 (blunt, clinical words for death) |
| Protestant | 소천 (socheon) | Was called by God and went home to Him (하나님의 부르심을 받아 소천하셨습니다) | 명복, 극락왕생 (Buddhist expressions for the afterlife) |
| Catholic | 선종 (seonjong) | Passed into the arms of the Lord (주님의 품으로 선종하셨습니다) | 명복, 극락왕생 |
| Buddhist | 별세 (byeolse) | We respectfully inform you that [name] passed away (별세하셨기에 삼가 알려드립니다) | 소천, 선종 |
[부고 (Death notice)] Our mother, Lee ○○, 권사 (gwonsa, a senior lay title in Korean Protestant churches), was called by God and went home to Him on October 7. Mourning hall: ○○ Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 2. Funeral service (발인예배): October 9, 8:00 a.m. Respectfully, Park △△, chief mourner
[부고 (Death notice)] Our father, Choi ○○, baptismal name Joseph, passed into the arms of the Lord on October 7. Mourning hall: ○○ St. Mary's Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 5. Funeral Mass: October 9, 9:00 a.m., ○○ Catholic Church. Respectfully, Choi △△, chief mourner
[부고 (Death notice)] Our mother, Jeong ○○, passed away on October 7. Mourning hall: ○○ Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 1. Departure for burial: October 9, 6:00 a.m. Resting place: columbarium at ○○ Temple. Respectfully, Jeong △△, chief mourner
Write according to the religion of the deceased and the family, not the recipient. This one word is also what mourners use to decide how to word their condolences.
In a group chat, it is better to post only the mourning hall, departure time and burial site, and leave out the account number. Not everyone in the chat is close enough to give 조의금 (condolence money), and once an account is posted, those who do not send feel pressured. Adding one line, "If you cannot visit, your thoughts are enough," lightens the mood.
When you do list an account, put it under the chief mourner's name and write it on one line in this order: bank, number, account holder. Even if there are several chief mourners, post only one account. If two are posted, people will message again asking which one to use.
Attaching a link-based mobile death notice (모바일 부고장) to the text reduces this worry. The map, departure time and account are on one screen, so the text can be short, and if the room changes you only edit the contents behind the link. Keeping the account inside the link also means no number is left in the group chat.
You can create a free mobile death notice on the Arrive in Bloom bugo page (flowername.co.kr/bugo/). Check it there.
Custom is to tell immediate family and close relatives by phone first, and send the text afterward. Workplaces, acquaintances and groups can be told by text.
Protestants use 소천 (socheon) and Catholics use 선종 (seonjong). Both avoid Buddhist expressions such as 명복 (myeongbok) or 극락왕생 (geungnak wangsaeng).
Post only the mourning hall and departure information in the group chat, and keep the account in individual texts or inside a link-based death notice. This puts less pressure on recipients.
You can create one free on the Arrive in Bloom bugo page (flowername.co.kr/bugo/). If the mourning hall or departure time changes, you only edit the contents behind the link.
You can create a free mobile death notice that puts the mourning hall map, departure schedule and account on one screen. See the Arrive in Bloom bugo page.
