What is a rice wreath, and how is it different from a donation wreath?

A rice wreath is a standing wreath of flowers and ribbons with sacks of rice placed at its base. It serves the same purpose as an ordinary congratulatory wreath for a shop opening, a wedding or an event venue. The difference is that once the event is over and the flowers fade, the rice remains to be eaten or given away.

"Donation wreath" is a broad term for any wreath where the money that would have gone on the wreath is given to charity instead. The rice wreath is the best-known kind, and after the event the rice is often delivered to a welfare facility or an organisation that helps neighbours in need. In a way, one order carries both a celebration and a gift.

The form of the wreath itself stays the same. Two ribbons hang vertically down either side. Facing the wreath, the right-hand ribbon carries the occasion phrase, such as 祝 開業 (congratulations on the opening) or 祝 結婚 (congratulations on the wedding), and the left-hand ribbon carries the sender's name. Shorter wording reads best, so one line of congratulation plus your name is quite enough.

Details such as the quality of the rice or the labelling on the sacks may vary with the product, so do read the product description before you order.

What sizes do rice wreaths come in, and how much do they cost?

At Arrive in Bloom (이름꽃), rice wreaths come in three sizes by weight of rice: 10kg, 20kg and 30kg. Delivery is included in the price, so there is nothing to pay on top of the amount shown.

ItemPriceNote
Rice wreath 10kg89,000 wonFor a thoughtful gesture without fuss
Rice wreath 20kg119,000 wonFor a close friend's opening or event
Rice wreath 30kg149,000 wonFor a big event, or to give more
Congratulatory wreath, 3-tierFrom 59,000 wonFor celebrating with a fresh-flower wreath

Compared with an ordinary congratulatory wreath, a rice wreath sits at a higher price. The weight of the rice is reflected in the cost, and it suits those who choose by what is left behind rather than by how showy the flowers look.

When choosing a size, it helps to think about the scale of the recipient's event and your relationship with them. There is no fixed rule, so simply pick a weight that sits comfortably within your budget.

The last row of the table is there for comparison. If you want the feel of fresh flowers, choose a congratulatory wreath; if you want the gesture to mean something after the event, choose a rice wreath.

What should I check beforehand if I'm sending one as a donation?

Where the rice goes is for the recipient and the donation organisation to decide. Rather than choosing for them, it is kinder to both sides to find out the recipient's wishes first. These are worth checking:

Do keep an eye on the delivery schedule too. Same-day delivery applies to orders placed before 5 p.m., and may vary by region and product. The wreath needs to arrive before the event begins, so we suggest ordering with time to spare.

A donation like this ends up in the name of the person hosting the event. If you let the recipient know in advance that you are sending a rice wreath, it becomes much easier for them to decide how to share the rice afterwards.

What if I would rather give something other than a rice wreath?

A rice wreath doesn't suit every celebration. For a small opening or a personal occasion, a flower basket or a bouquet may feel lighter and more fitting, starting at around 45,000 won. If you would like a gift that lasts, a potted money tree plant is 47,000 won.

For a funeral, it is usual to send a condolence wreath rather than a rice wreath. A condolence wreath costs 59,000 won for the 3-tier and 99,000 won for the premium 3-tier, and the right ribbon carries 謹弔 (with deepest condolences). Urgent delivery to a funeral hall takes about 3 hours.

You can also use our free tools when preparing for an event. You can make an opening announcement (/open/), a mobile wedding invitation (/wedding/) or a flower card (/card/) to send along with the wreath.

We deliver flowers across the country, and we handwrite the wording on the ribbon and card for free. Once the delivery is done we send you a photo of the real wreath, so you can see it was set out properly.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the rice from a rice wreath after the event?

After the event, the rice is often donated to a welfare facility or an organisation. The recipient or the event's hosts decide where it goes, so it is a good idea to ask what they would prefer before you send it.

How much does a rice wreath cost?

We offer 10kg at 89,000 won, 20kg at 119,000 won and 30kg at 149,000 won. Delivery is included in these prices.

What do I write on the ribbons of a rice wreath?

Two ribbons hang vertically down either side of the wreath. Facing it, the right-hand ribbon carries the occasion phrase, such as 祝 開業, and the left-hand ribbon carries the sender. We handwrite the wording for free.
