Birth Flowers for October and November

When every list says something different, send the season instead
Search for October's birth flower and some sites say cosmos while others say marigold. November is supposed to be the chrysanthemum, but day-by-day lists name other flowers. You can easily lose time trying to work out which one is right and end up ordering late.
The short answer is that no list is the correct one. Rather than trying to pick the right flower, it makes a better gift to send flowers that reflect the season of the person's birthday.

Birth flowers aren't set by any official body. Several lists circulate side by side: month-by-month lists that came from the West, lists that give every single day its own flower, and articles that copy from one or the other.
On the monthly lists, marigold and cosmos come up most often for October, and chrysanthemum for November. Dahlias are in season in autumn and are often listed as birthday flowers for this time of year as well.
On the day-by-day lists, it's common for the same date to have a different flower depending on the source. So the list the recipient finds may not match the one you found.
For that reason, describing a flower as “one often mentioned for autumn birthdays” is less likely to miss than calling it “your birth flower.”
Autumn flowers tend to share deeper, slightly muted colors. Instead of the bright pinks of spring, the palette centers on burgundy, terracotta, mustard and faded apricot.
Sometimes the birth flower itself is hard to get. Cosmos and marigolds are familiar from roadsides and flower beds, but their petals are delicate, so they are rarely used as the main flower in a bouquet.
In that case, choose by color rather than by flower name. A bouquet in the colors of the same season still clearly says “autumn birthday,” even without the birth flower in it.
Chrysanthemums need one extra check. In Korea, white chrysanthemums are closely associated with funerals and condolences, so for a birthday it's safer to choose 소국 (spray chrysanthemums) in yellow, orange or burgundy.
| Flower | Month it's often linked to | Typical colors | Using it in a gift |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmos | October | Pink, white, purple | Delicate petals; works well as a line on the card |
| Marigold | October | Orange, yellow | Carry its colors through with similar-colored flowers |
| Chrysanthemum | November | Yellow, orange, burgundy | Avoid an all-white arrangement |
| Dahlia | Throughout autumn | Burgundy, apricot, cream | Works well as the focal flower of a bouquet |
The simplest way is to write one line on the card. Rather than copying out a long flower meaning, briefly say why you chose these flowers. That tends to stay with the reader longer.
For you, born in October: I picked flowers that bloom this time of year.
With that one line, the meaning comes across even if there's no cosmos in the bouquet. A birth flower fits most naturally as the reason you give for your choice, not as an ingredient of the arrangement.
Flower meanings vary from source to source, and some carry meanings that don't suit a birthday. The heart of the gift is not the flower meaning but the fact that you remember the season they were born in.
