Money Trees and Happy Trees: The Classic Opening Gift Plants

How to choose a Zamioculcas or Happy Tree for a shop opening, and how to send it
An opening gift will sit in the shop for a long time, so a potted plant suits it better than cut flowers that wilt and have to be thrown away within days. The names of the money tree and the Happy Tree bring wealth and happiness to mind, so they have become a favourite way to offer warm wishes to someone opening a new business.
Both plants have thick, deep green leaves and look tidy wherever they are placed in a shop. Unlike flowers, they have no particular season for blooming and fading, so you can send them looking just the same whenever the opening day falls.
A potted plant is also practical because the recipient needs to prepare almost nothing. It arrives with its soil and pot, so there is no need to find a vase or fill it with water. Simply unwrap it and set it beside the till or near the entrance.
It is best to match the size to the shop. A pot that is too big for a small shop will block the way through and cause more bother than joy, so we suggest thinking about where it will stand before you send it.
That said, the meaning in the names is only a kind wish, and a plant will not decide a shop's actual sales. The real purpose of the gift is to share in the joy of a fresh start.

The money tree stores water in the thick rhizome beneath its stems, so it needs watering less often and copes reasonably well indoors where the light is weak. Many new businesses find it hard to spare time for plant care in the early days, so a low-maintenance plant is less of a burden.
The Happy Tree has small, round leaves growing densely along every branch, giving it a full, lush shape, and it looks its best in a bright spot. Water it only once you have checked that the soil has dried out thoroughly, as watering too often can damage the roots.
| Category | Money tree | Happy Tree |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf shape | Thick, long, spreading leaves | Small, round, densely packed leaves |
| Light | Tolerates dim indoor light | Prefers a bright spot |
| Watering | Long intervals | Water after the soil dries |
| Suits | Offices, consulting rooms | Shops with a window, cafés |
| Our price | 47,000 won | Varies by product |
If you cannot decide, picture the shop that will receive it. A Happy Tree suits a sunny window, while a money tree is a safe choice for an inner office or a space lit mainly by lamps.
Once either plant has settled in, it is best not to move it often. A sudden change of surroundings can make the leaves drop, so it helps to tell the recipient to let it grow on in the spot where it was first placed.
One word of caution: the sap of the money tree can irritate the skin or mouth. If children or pets come and go in the space, please let the recipient know to keep it out of their reach.
A wreath carries two ribbons hanging vertically down either side. Facing the wreath, the occasion phrase '祝 開業' (Congratulations on your opening) goes on the right-hand ribbon and the sender's name on the left. Using the same wording for a potted plant lets the recipient understand it at a glance.
The card message does not need to be long. Something short and clear, such as 'Heartfelt congratulations on your opening. From Hong Gil-dong', is quite enough, and if you find it hard to choose the words, you can put one together with our free Flower Card tool.
It is safest to have the gift arrive the day before the opening or before the event begins. Same-day delivery applies to orders placed before 5 p.m., though this may vary by area and product, so please check before you order.
Please check the recipient's name, the shop name, the opening date and the delivery address once more before ordering. If many shops in the area have similar names, adding the floor or unit number helps prevent delivery mix-ups.
If you would rather send a wreath than a plant, a 3-tier congratulatory wreath starts at 59,000 won. A rice wreath, which has a sack of rice placed beneath the flower and ribbon wreath, costs 89,000 won for 10 kg, 119,000 won for 20 kg and 149,000 won for 30 kg. To announce the opening, you can make an invitation with our free Opening Announcement tool.
