Orchids as a Chuseok Gift: The Language of Formality

On the quiet dignity of orchids and the etiquette of holiday gifts
Chuseok is a holiday for giving thanks for the year's harvest and paying respects to family and elders. A gift offered at this time carries a sense of propriety before it carries any price. The orchid has long been a gift that conveys that propriety without a word.
Orchids have traditionally been regarded as the plant a scholar keeps close at hand. They do not catch the eye with showy blooms. Instead, their dignity shows in upright leaves and a delicate fragrance. For that reason they have been read as flowers of integrity and steadfastness, and are thought to suit a gift for an elder.
Another reason is that an orchid stays with its owner for a long time. Cut flowers wilt within days, but an orchid that is well looked after can send up a new flower spike year after year. Each time the recipient tends it at home, they are reminded of the person who sent it, so the holiday greeting does not end after a single day.
Choosing a holiday gift is also a matter of considering the recipient's age and tastes. Unlike fruit or traditional sweets, which are gone once eaten, an orchid remains in the home and passes on your greetings season after season. It also says something about the care and good taste of the person who chose it.

Gift orchids fall broadly into two groups: Oriental and Western. Oriental orchids have neat, graceful leaves and a gentle fragrance, while Western orchids have large, vividly coloured flowers that look cheerful at a glance. Even among orchids, the impression can differ quite a bit depending on the recipient's taste and the feel of their home.
| Category | Oriental orchid | Western orchid |
|---|---|---|
| First impression | Neat and calm | Bright and abundant |
| Highlights | Lines of the leaves and a delicate fragrance | Large flowers and vivid colour |
| Best suited to | Holiday greetings to elders | Cheerful occasions such as housewarmings and new business openings |
For a formal gift to an elder, you might think of a neat Oriental orchid; for a brighter mood, a Western orchid. The moth orchid is a Western orchid commonly given as a gift. Its flowers hang along the stem as if butterflies had settled on it, which makes for a rich display.
Either way, a pot with several buds will keep flowering for longer than one already in full bloom. It is also worth checking that the leaves are firm rather than wilted, and that the roots are not soft.
The flowering season and its length also vary from one type of orchid to another. When choosing a gift, it helps to see whether the plant will be in flower around the holiday, and how many flower spikes it has. The more spikes there are, the fuller the pot looks and the more substantial it feels as a gift.
With a holiday gift, the timing of its arrival is part of the courtesy. Deliveries are heavily booked just before Chuseok, so it is best to order a few days ahead and to ask in advance when the recipient will be at home. A pot is heavy, and it is often not practical to simply leave it at the door.
Do write the sender's name clearly on the gift. The message need not be long. Something as simple as “Wishing you peace and good health this Hangawi (Chuseok). From Hong Gil-dong” is polite enough, with just your good wishes and your name.
If the recipient's household has several members, it is best to make sure the sender's name is easy to see on the card. Knowing who sent the gift makes it easier for them to return the greeting without overlooking anyone.
It is also nice to add a line of advice for the recipient. Letting them know that an orchid lasts longest in a bright, well-ventilated spot out of direct sunlight means the gift comes across as thoughtful rather than burdensome.
For someone who has never grown an orchid, looking after the pot can become more of a chore. In that case, it is easier on everyone to choose a plant that is simple to care for, or flowers to enjoy once and be done with. A money tree pot costs 47,000 won, and flower baskets and bouquets start at around 45,000 won.
If you know the recipient's health or living circumstances, choosing to suit them is the best guide. The formality of a gift comes from the care put into it more than from the kind of flower.
A short, handwritten card helps the recipient feel your thoughts more clearly. You can also polish your greeting beforehand with our free flower card tool (/card/).

For formal occasions, a neat Oriental orchid is the usual choice. If you would like a brighter, fuller look, a Western orchid such as the moth orchid is also a good option.
