Can I send my parents flowers when I can't go home for Chuseok?

The best thing at Chuseok is to travel home and see your parents in person, but some years schedules or distance simply get in the way. When that happens, a gift that arrives ahead of you lets your thoughts reach them a little sooner.

Fruit and traditional sweets are the usual holiday gifts, but flowers are different: rather than disappearing once eaten, they stay in the house for several days. Placed in the living room or on the dining table, they become something your parents notice in passing and are reminded of you.

One caveat is that flowers are easiest to deliver when someone is at home to receive them. People tend to be out and about over the holiday, so it is best to tell your parents beforehand and confirm the day and time of day they will be in.

Before choosing a gift, think about whether your parents usually enjoy flowers and whether they have a spot at home to put them. For those who aren't fond of flowers, a potted plant or a gift that includes rice may be more welcome.

Which flower gifts suit parents?

For older people, soft colours are often more comfortable than bright ones. A flower basket mixing white, pink and yellow needs no vase, so there is very little for the recipient to do.

If you would like the gift to last, a potted plant is another option. The money plant (geumjeonsu) doesn't need frequent watering, which suits anyone who finds upkeep a bother. The table below sets out what you can order from Arrive in Bloom (이름꽃).

ItemPrice (delivery included)Good for
Flower basketFrom around 45,000 wonWhen you want to put it straight on display, without a vase
BouquetFrom around 45,000 wonWhen there is a vase at home
Money plant (geumjeonsu) pot47,000 wonWhen you'd like it to last a long time
Rice wreath, 10kg89,000 wonWhen you want to send flowers and rice together

A rice wreath is a wreath decorated with flowers and ribbon, with a sack of rice placed beneath it. It isn't rice instead of flowers but the two sent together. The 20kg version is 119,000 won and the 30kg version is 149,000 won.

Once the flowers have arrived, picking off any wilted leaves and changing the water often will help them last longer. A quick word about this on the phone will make them much easier for your parents to look after.

How should I word the card, and can I see the flowers once they've arrived?

A short message alongside the flowers makes the meaning of the gift clear. There is no need to write at length; one or two lines in your usual way of speaking is plenty. For example:

We write the ribbon and card message by hand, free of charge. Your message is copied exactly as you wrote it when ordering, so please take care to give the recipient's form of address and your own name correctly.

Once the delivery is complete, we send you a photo of the actual flowers. You can check that they have been set down nicely before you phone your parents, which also makes it easier to bring up the flowers in conversation. The flower card tool on our website is free to use as well.

When ordering, you will need the recipient's name, contact number and full address. For an apartment, include the building and unit numbers; for a house in the countryside, a few easy directions will help the delivery go smoothly.

How far ahead should I order, and can I send from far away?

We deliver flowers across Korea, and same-day delivery applies to orders placed before 5 p.m. This may vary by area and by item. Orders tend to pile up over the holiday, so we recommend ordering well in advance.

If you choose a delivery date a few days before Chuseok, you avoid the busiest holiday period, and your parents can enjoy the flowers for a few extra days. When setting your budget, bear in mind that the prices in the table include delivery.

You can also order from abroad. Payment is in US dollars through PayPal, and if you enter your parents' hometown address, the flowers will go to their door.

We deliver flowers nationwide at prices that include delivery, and we send you a photo of the actual flowers afterwards. If you are looking for a flower basket or bouquet to send to your parents before Chuseok, we invite you to take a look at our shop.
