What does the lily mean in flower language?

The lily's best-known meanings are purity and dignity. It is generally thought that these two ideas come from the clear light of its white petals, its upright stem and its wide-open, generous blooms.

Purity comes from the white colour and the clean fragrance, while dignity comes from the tall, straight stature and the confident flower heads. Because the lily carries two meanings of such different character, it is used both in wedding bouquets and in memorial tributes.

That said, flower meanings differ a little from country to country and from source to source, and the interpretation can change with the colour of the flower. When choosing a gift, it is better not to cling to a single meaning, but to consider the recipient's tastes and the mood of the occasion as well.

Another thing worth knowing is that lilies have a strong scent. That fragrance is part of their charm, but it can feel overwhelming in a small space, so it helps to think ahead about where you will put them. Many stems carry several blooms, so just a few stems can look wonderfully full.

Which occasions suit lilies?

Lilies are large and have real presence, so even one or two blooms will anchor a bouquet. Below, we have set out why they suit each occasion and what to keep in mind.

OccasionWhy it suitsThings to keep in mind
Weddings and anniversariesThe white blooms carry the meaning of purity and look neat and elegant. The scent is strong, so please avoid placing them on the dining table.
Funerals and memorialsTheir dignified look is in tune with the wish to honour the person who has passed.Keep the arrangement calm, mainly in white.
Housewarmings and shop openingsThe large blooms fill the space with brightness.Choose a spot where the pollen will not brush against clothes.

For a celebration, you can also mix in pink or yellow lilies alongside the white to brighten the mood. A different colour gives a different impression, so simply choose to match the character of the occasion.

For a housewarming or shop opening, a flower basket or a bouquet is a popular choice. Since the flowers are large, it is best to choose a roomy basket or vase for a good balance, and adding other flowers helps the tidy elegance of the white lilies stand out even more.

At a funeral, calm matters more than showiness. An arrangement centred on white flowers is a safe way to express your feelings, and on a wreath ribbon, facing the wreath, a phrase of condolence such as 謹弔 (a respectful expression of condolence) goes on the right and the sender's name on the left.

How should lilies be cared for so they last?

Lilies usually arrive in bud and open one after another over several days. Rather than expecting full bloom from the start, it is easier to think of them as flowers whose opening you get to watch.

Once the flowers open, yellow pollen forms on the tips of the stamens inside. This pollen stains clothes and white petals and is hard to remove, so once a bloom opens, a common approach is to gently pinch off the stamen tips with a tissue. If pollen does land on something, please do not rub it; just flick it off lightly.

Households with cats need to take particular care. Lilies are known to be toxic to cats, so petals, pollen and even the water the flowers stand in must be kept out of their reach. In such cases, it is safer to choose another flower instead of lilies.

Removing faded blooms promptly helps the remaining buds open more cleanly. Once the stems begin to go soft, trim the remaining flowers short and move them to a small vase, and you can enjoy them a little longer.
