Gold, at desk height
Gold One is a small-flowered Phalaenopsis, and the blooms come in numbers — dozens of butter-yellow flowers with a pink and gold throat, carried on slim arching stems above glossy leaves.
Because the plant is compact it goes where a full-size orchid cannot: an executive desk, a shop counter, a shelf in the living room. Wherever it lands, it is the brightest thing in the room.
Why gold
The colour carries the message. In Korea the golden orchid stands for wealth and prosperity, which is why it is chosen so often for an opening or a promotion rather than a plain white plant.
The pot was chosen to match. A clean white ceramic pot keeps the yellow looking elegant rather than loud, and settles into any interior.
It lasts. Expect one to two months of flower, and often longer.
Keeping it in flower
Water about once every ten to fourteen days, when the surface of the mix has dried out completely, giving enough that a little runs from the bottom of the pot. Pour onto the mix only — water sitting on the petals marks them and makes them fade early.
Keep it indoors near a window with good light, out of cold draughts. It dislikes the cold, so in winter keep it in a warm room above 15°C rather than on a veranda. Pinch off flowers as they go over and the rest will hold longer.
