The flowers open along arching stems like a line of white butterflies coming to rest. From a chief executive's office to a family living room, the orchid reads the same way: composed, generous, unmistakably a gift.
It is planted in a modern white porcelain pot with a fine vertical rib, so the container belongs in the room as much as the flowers do.
Why an orchid rather than a bouquet
It keeps going. Once open, the flowers usually hold their form for one to two months, and longer when they are looked after. A bouquet says congratulations for a few days; this says it for a season.
The bloom is full. Large, clean petals cover the whole pot rather than a single stem.
The pot is part of the gift. The ribbed white porcelain was chosen to sit well in a modern interior.
Keeping it in flower
Give it a bright spot indoors, near a window but out of direct sun, where the air moves. Water only when the surface of the mix has dried out completely — roughly once every ten to fourteen days — then water thoroughly until it runs from the bottom of the pot.
Pour at the roots and keep water off the petals. The orchid dislikes cold, so through winter keep the room above 15°C. Cared for this way, it will stay in flower for two months or more.
